Will the FollowPrint feature only work with printers from specific manufacturers?

No; the FollowPrint feature in PrintPath is agnostic to the type of printer you are releasing the print job to.  However, please note that the FollowPrint driver you select on the input side will determine which printers are compatible for releasing print jobs to on the output side.

To illustrate how this works, let's look at two different examples:

  1. If you choose an input print driver that is specific to a manufacturer and a particular family of printers for that manufacturer, you will only be able to release print jobs to printers belonging to that same family and manufacturer since they need to be compatible with that specific print driver.  The advantage to this approach is that you can make use of special finishing options that are usually device-specific.

  2. If you choose an input print driver that is generic (such as a generic PCL or PostScript driver), you will be able to release print jobs to virtually any printer that understands that same print language (e.g. PCL or PostScript).  The disadvantage to this approach is that you cannot take advantage of special finishing options that are only accessible through the device-specific print driver.
